Falcona Camp

Camp Falcona is a children's camp near Falconbridge that was originally run by Falconbridge Nickel Mines for the employees children. It is now run by the YMCA. Nelson Lake was the setting and children attended Camp for 1-4 weeks in the months of July and August.

 

My connection?...My husband, John, attended Falcona for many, many happy years...

 

Some of the names of former Falcona Campers like Sheppard, Larson, Mcdonald,Zula, Comba, Wilson, Johnston, Boone,Palmaruk,Scott, Mather, Lapierre , White, Lacey,Hodge, Stagg and Barton, are just a few of the campers I have heard so much about.

 

I also was told that on occasion after lunch or dinner, Jack Nihill, the Falcona Camp director, on request by the campers, would  reluctantly speak for a few short minutes, in Chinese...that I would have liked to hear!

 

I recently visited Falcona Camp and met all the campers and staff, who were enjoying their summer vacation. What a great Camp and what a terrific location.

 

On the left in the picture is Intermediate A Cabin, with the "Little Dock" in front. To the right of that is  the Junior Cabin , then the Workshop and besides that is the Combined Nurses Cabin and "Panny" (Panic) Quarters.

 

The Lodge is the biggest building on the right and in the foreground is the Flag Pole and Totem Pole.

 

Behind the Camp was a huge Sleeping Giant viewed from the Lake, formed by several hills, resting, head to toe.
